Spring Has Sprung in HBC
Ahhh! April is finally here! So many exciting things going on here this month, including the Urban Homesteading Fair. In the HBC department we have tons of new and fun things including new gardening and permaculture books, fermenting crocks in 1 and 2 gallon sizes so you can get your wild fermentation on, Provence and Apiana soaps, and a new line of totally natural and organic perfumes from Acorelle.
We have also brought in some new garden items including Biochar and new housewear items such as hemp twine, fancy canning jars, and recycled stemless wine glasses.
In supplements we have expanded our line of Eclectic herbs and powders. This is one of the oldest and best quality herb lines I know of. Their products are freeze dried and retain maximum potency in a powder form, which is rare in the land of ground herbs. Their Nettles and Nettles Quercitin blend are the best for seasonal allergies. Also consider some of the herb and vegetable powders such as kale, Red Defense, and Purple Probiotic POWders. These are a great nutritional boost added to your daily smoothies or even hummus . The Black Raspberry powder is divine in yogurt with a bit of honey.
In bodycare we have the Sibu Sea Buckthorn line, which is amazing! All of the oils are popular right now, such as argan, rosehip seed, and sea buckthorn. Sea Buckthorn is one of my favorites, as it contains omega 3, 6, 7, &9 and is wonderfully restorative to the skin. This products line is made from fair trade Himalayan berries, which supports the indigenous economy. I love the products that are effective and truly support the people. We should have many more opportunities such as this to have our dollar really matter.
Locally, look for Gypsy Bee Soaps and Sleepy Hollow Farms Jewelweed & Elder Blossom soap, Goldenseal Repair Cream, and Cold & Sinus Balm. Klean Kanteen bottles will also be arriving shortly! Just in time for Earth Day. Many of us strive to lessen our impact and refilling your own water bottles and carrying your own insulated mug for coffee and tea is a super easy way to do that. Less plastic in our environment and less (eek!) styrofoam.
A great pre workout blend for that water bottle from our Health Force rep is to add 1 tsp. Truly Natural C and 1/2 tsp. Vanilla Chai Maca Force. Delicious and healthier than a lot of the Pre Workout Blends on the market.
This is the season where I am ready to spring clean! One of my favorite and easily made cleaning blends:
Herbal Scrub Powder
1 cup borax
1 cup baking soda
1 cup washing soda (I use 7th generation laundry powder)
20 drops of essential oil
Mix together in a glass or ceramic bowl. Store in a large glass jar and use for scrubbing bathtubs, sinks, counter tops, or as a laundry booster (about 1/2 cup per load). You can also add this to a liquid soap such as Dr. Bronners and create your own soft scrub. For the essential oils, i mix it up with each new batch. Think Eucalyptus Lemon, Rosemary- Mint, or Tea Tree and Citrus.
We will host a class on the Herbal Home- Create your own delicious and affordable natural cleaning products on Wednesday April 9th from 5-7pm. $20 Owners, $25 Non Owners
On Saturday April 5th at 11-1 our class will be on Wild Foraging. Learning and identifying the easy and delicious edibles around us, in the city or countryside. We will (weather pending) take a walk around the co-op grounds and see the the many plants that grow freely and abundantly that can be used for food and teas. $20 Owners, $25 Non owners
Well, a busy Spring is bursting! May you have time to enjoy it with laughter and warmth. Melissa
