Herbs for Heart Health & Valentine's Day

Happy February to all! It has been an intense winter for most of us in this region and I am happy to see the wheel spinning towards spring! These last days of winter always inspire me to go within and hibernate a bit before the busy of spring and planting and more light. Of course, there is no hibernation here at the Co-op. We continue to grow and transform.

This time of year in HBC, the cold and flu remedies are the focus. Vitality Works Cold & Sinus Blaster, Planetary Formulas Old Indian Cough Syrup, Truly C by Health Force, and Eclectics Lomatium OSHA throat spray are my must haves to stay healthy this season.

With February comes the focus on the heart and libido. Hawthorn berries are my favorite heart food, having a tonic effect on the heart, normalizing blood pressure, and helping support healthy cholesterol levels. Hawthorn is also delicious prepared as a jam, conserve, or solid extract. Both Herbalists & Alchemists and Gaia Herbs carry solids that taste wonderful!

One of my favorite heart healthy teas:
2 parts hawthorn berries
1 part linden leaf and flower
1 part lemon peel

This tea is astringent and toning to the heart and makes you feel "heartened".

Valentine’s Day brings a renewed interest in healthy libido and aphrodisiacs. Lucky for us there are so many herbs that we can utilize to nourish our inner vixens. Damiana, horny goat weed, shatavari, and ginseng are just a few of the plants that boost sexual vitality.

One of my favorite Sexy Time Teas:
2 cups milk (cow, goat, hemp, almond, coconut, etc.)
1 tsp. shatavari powder
2 cardamom pods
Pinch of sandalwood powder
Honey to taste

Gently warm the cardamom pods, sandalwood powder, and shatavari powder until hot. Remove the cardamom pods, add honey and a splash of rose water to taste. Shatavari is translated to mean "she who possesses 100 husbands" and is a wonderful reproductive tonic for women.

On Sunday, February 9th I will teach an Herbal Aphrodesiac class in the Movement and Learning Center from 1:30 until 3:30. Cost is $20 for owners and $25 for non owners. We will cover healthy sexuality, sexy foods, and herbal aphrodisiacs. We will make an edible love butter and chocolate rose syrup to take home and share with our loves.

Also, I will sample out various love treats on Wednesday, February 12th from 3-5 pm at the Co-op. Come sample some delicious herbal chocolates and get the recipes to treat your valentine this year! I hope your month is filled with good, nourishing food and warmth and big love! Thanks for nourishing your community by supporting the Co-op!
