Good News & Happy New Year from HBC

Happy 2014! For a new year, many of you make resolutions or goals: to eat better, lose weight, organize your home, or spend better time with loved ones. Ahhh ... so many things we want to do and improve! Striving to improve is always lovely, but I also want to take a moment to just enjoy the goodness right now. Wallow a bit in the changes and joy of the year past. For me, it’s always easy to only see how far I have to go ... sometimes I lose sight of how far I have come. So, I wish for you contentment in this new year ... with who you are and where you are headed. Joy in your strengths and weaknesses, and laughter to ease it all. I am consistently grateful for this wonderful group of people who make up the Co-op community.

Now ... on to the goals! Many of us wish to get in better shape at this time of year.
Especially after a fabulous food frenzy that is the holidays for most of us. Well, I'm here to say....it ain't easy. Dr. Oz new amazing lose 100 pounds in 3 days aside, it really takes eating right for your body and exercising regularly. Sure, green tea can boost metabolism a bit, chickweed helps emulsify fat, and using traditional liver supporting herbs like dandelion, burdock, and milk thistle can improve digestion overall. Yet there is no plant or substance that can negate a poor diet. So I hope for this new year, if eating better or shedding a few pounds is on your goal list, that you find the right way to eat for your body. We have many books to guide you in our book section. My favorites include Nourishing Traditions by Sally Fallon and the new Michael Pollen book Cooked.

We also have many farm to table style books, which always tend to be among my favorites as I aspire to eat more locally whenever possible. Also new in our book land is The Nourishing Traditions Book of Baby & Childcare, Donald Yances' Adaptogen Herbal, and Stephen Buhners’ new Herbal Antivirals. Please let me know if there are favorite titles you would like to see!

We are continuing to get new products in regularly. New this month is Zenjenskin: a local line of skin care that is truly food for your skin! We also carry the fair trade African market baskets and garden hats that many of you requested. These are a necessity for shopping, wildcrafting and storage in my home. Breaux is a new line of alpaca hats, gloves, and scarves made in Peru. These are utterly decadent, warm, and stylish! We do still have some calendars available as well and will get more Wemoon's in soon!


In Bulk herbs, we continue to have out of stocks regularly, but nettles and oatstraw are currently available and in stock. Yayee! Many of us experienced the lack of nettles for months! I am working hard to get consistent supplies of all the herbs and will soon post a regular update in the herb room concerning out of stock issues.

I will leave you with a couple of recipes that I use often this time of year to stay healthy and treat or prevent colds and flus:

 

Rosemary's Fire Cider
1 medium onion chopped
4-6 cloves garlic chopped
3-4 Tbsp. freshly grated ginger root
3-4 Tbsp. freshly grated horseradish root
Apple cider vinegar (raw and unpasteurized preferred)
honey to taste
cayenne powder to taste

Gently heat the vinegar and pour over the onion, garlic, ginger and horseradish. Make sure the vinegar totally covers the herbs and then some. Let sit for 3-4 weeks, strain, then add the honey and cayenne to taste. You can take a tablespoon or so a day or use it on salads or greens. Delicious!

Raven's Wings Foot Balm by Stephanie Tourles
4 Tbsp. Shea butter
15 drops eucalyptus essential oil
10 drops cajeput essential oil
10 drops ravensare essential oil
10 frops rosemary essential oil
5 drops peppermint essential oil
2 drops cinnamon essential oil
2 drops clove essential oil

To make is easy...gently melt shea butter in a double boiler, remove from heat and add essential oils. Pour into container and let solidify. Apply small amount to feet and put on socks. Can be used as a preventative from colds and flus or to help ease symptoms as the essential oils included are anti-vital, antiseptic, and respiratory system cleansing! And you soften your feet!
